About MX5 files

A .MX5 file is an audio project file created by Mixcraft 5, a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) developed by Acoustica. It saves the layout of a multi-track mixing session, including audio track paths, MIDI data, VST plugin settings, track volumes, and automation curves. It is used by musicians and producers to save their working progress on a song or podcast.

The major disadvantage of the .MX5 format is that it is proprietary and closed. More importantly, a .MX5 file does not contain any actual audio data. It only stores text-based references to the local audio files on your computer's hard drive. Because it is highly specific to the Acoustica software engine, users are forced to pay for and install Mixcraft on a Windows PC just to open the project. If you send a .MX5 file to someone else without the linked source audio files, the recipient will hear absolute silence.

Users typically want to convert .MX5 files into standard, playable audio formats like MP3, WAV, or FLAC. Standard online audio converters fail completely at this task because they lack both the original source audio files and the proprietary Mixcraft playback engine. To get a playable track, you must open the file in the original software and select 'Mix Down to Audio File'.

Because this file format is inherently difficult to open or convert, often only the original software can properly read or export the data. By reading the internal text, you can recover your track names, plugin settings, and exact file paths for missing audio. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MX5 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
