To convert other file formats to the "Project Template File" file type, you need software like CODESYS or a similar tool.
The .mwt file format has three distinct and completely incompatible uses. The most common application is a PLC Project Template file. These files store control logic, variables, and configuration settings for industrial automation, primarily used by the CODESYS Development System or as a Mitsubishi Works file. Another major application is a Chart Template for MetaStock for Windows, a technical analysis software for financial markets. Finally, some .mwt files are actually quarantined malware threats isolated by Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
These files present significant usability challenges. The industrial and financial template formats are strictly proprietary. You cannot open a CODESYS template in a standard text editor, and MetaStock files require a costly software subscription to interpret the financial charting data. They are heavily locked into their native ecosystems, making standard file sharing difficult. Furthermore, Malwarebytes files are intentionally disabled executables (EXE) designed to prevent accidental execution, meaning you cannot open them normally at all.
Converting .mwt files is highly problematic. Standard online converters fail because the format is closed and lacks universal standards. Financial templates might be exported to CSV or XLSX, but only from within the original MetaStock application. PLC logic usually requires the native development environment to export to XML or Structured Text. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or extraction may still be viable despite the proprietary wrapper.
