About MVY files

The .MVY file is a proprietary video project file used primarily by MAGIX Movie Edit Pro, Magix Video Deluxe, and the legacy MAGIX Video easy software. Under the hood, these files utilize a RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format) container structure to store project metadata. A major disadvantage of the .MVY format is that it is often misunderstood. Users frequently assume it contains actual video data. In reality, it is simply an edit decision list. It stores file paths, cut points, transition settings, and audio levels, but absolutely zero video frames. Because it is a proprietary project file, it is highly restrictive. You cannot open it without a paid MAGIX software license, and sharing the file with colleagues is useless unless you also send the gigabytes of original source video files. Because it lacks video and audio streams, you cannot convert an .MVY file to standard targets like MP4, MOV, or AVI using conventional video conversion tools like FFmpeg or HandBrake. Online converters will simply fail or return an error. The only realistic way to convert this file is to open it in its native MAGIX environment and export the timeline to a standard video format.
