The .MUX file format is most commonly associated with Kazam Screencaster, a popular open-source screen recording tool for Linux. Kazam generates these files as temporary storage while a screen recording is actively running. They are essentially raw video and audio streams waiting to be multiplexed into a standard container like MKV or MP4 when the recording is stopped gracefully. In secondary use cases, .MUX acts as a packaged audio format for Ubisoft games like ManiaPlanet and Trackmania, or as a stand-alone music score file for Myriad Software products.
Handling a .MUX file directly is highly problematic. Because Kazam .MUX files are temporary, they lack the header information required by standard video players like VLC. If the software crashes or your system loses power during recording, you are left with an unplayable .MUX file that consumes massive disk space and cannot be edited or uploaded. Similarly, game audio .MUX files are strictly proprietary and locked to the game engine, making them useless for general playback on standard devices.
