About MTO files

.MTO files are Material Take-Off text files generated by FastCAM, a specialized 2D CNC profiling software. These files store tabular parts lists, material requirements, and nesting instructions for plasma, laser, and waterjet cutting machines.

Opening .MTO files outside of the FastCAM software is highly problematic. The format is heavily coupled with this proprietary ecosystem. Without a paid license, users cannot easily read the data. Standard text editors may open the file, but the output often lacks proper column formatting. This makes it extremely difficult for procurement managers or shop-floor workers to use the data. Sharing nesting data with external ERP systems or clients usually requires tedious manual data entry if the file remains in the .MTO format.

To solve this, users frequently need to convert .MTO files to standard tabular formats like CSV, XLSX, or standard TXT. Converting makes the material lists accessible in standard spreadsheet applications like Microsoft Excel for inventory tracking and quoting.

Because .MTO is an industrial format built on proprietary delimiters, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original software can properly read or export the structured data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MTO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The MTO Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MTO converter.
