About MSWMM files
An .MSWMM file is a proprietary project file created by the discontinued Windows Movie Maker (versions 1.1 through 6.0). Crucially, this is not a video file; it is a timeline database that stores edit decisions, transition settings, and file paths pointing to the actual video, audio, and image assets stored on your local computer's hard drive.
Users frequently encounter critical issues when attempting to share or convert these files. Since the file only contains directory links (e.g., C:\MyVideos\clip1.avi), moving the .MSWMM file to another computer, emailing it, or uploading it to a converter without the source assets results in "missing file" errors (often displayed as red 'X' icons). Additionally, because Windows Movie Maker was retired by Microsoft in 2017, opening these legacy projects on modern operating systems like Windows 10 or 11 requires locating specific archived versions of the software (such as WMM 6.0).
To make the content usable, the project must first be opened in Windows Movie Maker and "Published" or "Saved as Movie" to export a WMV (Windows Media Video) file.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MSWMM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MSWMM file to MP4, WMV, AVI, MOV, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M4V, 3GP, OGV, ASF or RM, you can use Windows Movie Maker or similar software from the "Video Editing Project" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to MSWMM, try Windows Movie Maker or another comparable tool in the "Video Editing Project" category.
The MSWMM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MSWMM converter.
