The .MPCPL file is a proprietary playlist format generated by Media Player Classic (including the popular MPC-HC and MPC-BE forks). It functions as a plain text map that points the player to specific audio or video files on your hard drive, allowing them to play in a sequenced order. Internally, the file uses a unique structure starting with the header MPCPLAYLIST, followed by lines numbered sequentially (e.g., 1,filename,movie.avi).
While effective within its native ecosystem, the .MPCPL format is a major bottleneck for interoperability. Unlike the universally supported M3U or PLS formats, .MPCPL files are not recognized by standard media players like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player, nor are they supported by mobile apps on Android or iOS. Furthermore, manually editing these files is notoriously difficult; because every line is indexed (1, 2, 3...), simply moving a song from the bottom of the list to the top requires renumbering every single subsequent line in a text editor.
To make these playlists usable on other devices or players, users should convert them to M3U8 (for universal unicode support) or XSPF (for modern, XML-based portability). For users simply wanting to see what is in the list without installing software, converting to TXT provides a clean, readable manifest of filenames.
