The .MPC extension most commonly identifies Musepack audio files, a legacy open-source audio format heavily optimized for high-quality transparent compression. Unlike MP3, which was designed for lower bitrates, Musepack (formerly MPEGplus) is based on MP2 algorithms and excels at bitrates above 160 kbps. While it offers superior sound quality compared to older MP3 encoders, it suffers from severe compatibility friction: it is not supported by standard web browsers, mobile devices (iOS/Android), or most car audio systems without third-party apps like VLC media player. Users typically convert these files to MP3 or AAC for universal playback, or FLAC to archive the audio without further generation loss.
Alternatively, in industrial settings, an .MPC file may be a project file created by Weidmüller M-Print PRO, used to design labels for electrical terminal blocks. These files often act as ZIP containers holding project data. Because this format is proprietary to the labeling hardware, engineers often need to convert these designs to PDF for proofing or sharing with clients who do not have the specialized software installed. A less common variant involves CarveWright CNC project files, which are strictly machine-readable.
