About MODFEM files

.MODFEM files store 3D mesh data, material properties, loads, and boundary conditions for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) within Siemens Femap. Engineers use these files to set up complex structural and thermal simulations. Because it is highly proprietary, a .MODFEM file is locked into the Siemens ecosystem. A major disadvantage is the requirement of an expensive commercial license just to view the mesh structure. Files also frequently exceed several gigabytes due to high-density mesh generation. You cannot open a .MODFEM file in a web browser, standard image viewer, or even generic CAD software like AutoCAD. Users typically need to convert these models to neutral CAD formats like STEP or IGES to share geometry, or BDF (Nastran Bulk Data File) for external solver analysis. Note that converting to these target formats usually strips away proprietary material definitions, leaving only the base geometry. Because this format is heavily closed, it is notoriously difficult to process without the original software API, causing standard online converters to fail. If our analysis detects supported underlying geometry data or plain-text Nastran decks embedded within the file, viewing or extraction might still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MODFEM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The MODFEM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MODFEM converter.
