A .mlproj file functions as either a MATLAB Archived Project created by MathWorks or an Apple Create ML Project managed within Xcode. These files bundle code, datasets, and configurations into a single container for easy sharing among developers.
In the MATLAB ecosystem, MATLAB uses the format to compress source code (M), data (MAT), and Simulink models (SLX). Apple's Create ML uses it as a macOS package to store machine learning model parameters and training sets. However, both variants are heavily restricted by their proprietary ecosystems. MATLAB files require expensive software subscriptions to execute, while Apple's packages lock your machine learning workflow entirely to macOS hardware. If you have a MATLAB .mlproj, the most practical workaround is to rename the file extension to ZIP. You can then extract the raw text and data files using standard tools, though you will lose the executable environment. For Apple projects, macOS users can right-click and select 'Show Package Contents' to manually recover embedded image or text datasets, or use Xcode to formally export a compiled MLMODEL file.
