About MIO files
The .MIO extension usually refers to music project files created by Mario Paint Composer, a popular PC remake of the SNES music sequencing game. These files store note placement, tempo, and instrument data (e.g., Mario, Yoshi, Star icons) but are not standard audio files like MP3 or WAV. Because they are proprietary project data, you cannot play them in standard media players like VLC Media Player or on mobile devices without conversion. Users frequently need to convert .MIO files to MP3 for sharing on YouTube or to MIDI to edit the composition in professional DAWs like FL Studio.
A secondary but significant use of the format is by Entis Corporation for Music Interleaved Orthogonal audio. These are compressed audio containers used in specific Japanese gaming engines (Entis GLS). Unlike the Mario Paint files, these contain actual audio data but are heavily compressed and require the Entis codec or specific game extractors to open. Additionally, the Nintendo DS game WarioWare D.I.Y. uses .MIO files for exporting microgames and records (music) to SD cards, often managed by homebrew tools like CrygorTool.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MIO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The MIO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MIO converter.
