About MGU files

The .mgu file format primarily stores musical scores and compositions created by Myriad Software's Melody Assistant and Harmony Assistant. Alternatively, it is used by MusicGloves for MIDI Guitar Tuning data. These files carry major disadvantages for modern music sharing. The .mgu format is highly proprietary and tightly locked to the Myriad ecosystem. You cannot natively open it in standard web browsers, mobile audio players, or mainstream notation tools like MuseScore without experiencing compatibility failures. This vendor lock-in severely limits collaboration. To make the musical data usable elsewhere, you must convert .mgu to standard target formats. The best conversion targets are .MusicXML for transferring editable sheet music, .MIDI for raw digital playback data, or .PDF and .WAV for basic read-only sharing. Because this file format is heavily closed, it is notoriously difficult to open or convert with third-party tools. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data.
