About MGT files
The .MGT file format is a proprietary data container created for Musicnotes Guitar Guru. These files store interactive guitar lessons, combining synchronized audio playback, digital tablature, and visual fretboard indicators. They were designed to help musicians learn songs by slowing down playback without altering pitch.
The primary disadvantage of the .MGT format is its severe vendor lock-in. It is a closed, proprietary file type that requires an outdated, specific software application to open. It is not supported by standard web browsers, modern sheet music editors, or generic media players. If you do not have the Guitar Guru software installed, the data inside the file is essentially trapped. Furthermore, these files cannot easily be shared with other musicians who use standard tablature software like Guitar Pro.
Users typically want to convert .MGT files to PDF for printable sheet music, MusicXML for importing into modern notation software like Sibelius or MuseScore, or MP3 to extract the backing audio track. However, because this is a closed format that interleaves proprietary notation and media, standard online converters fail to process it. Our tool inspects the binary structure of the .MGT file to locate unencrypted text, XML-based notation data, or embedded audio streams. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MGT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The MGT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MGT converter.
