The .MFJ file extension represents a StarUML Model Fragment, an exportable section of a larger UML model project. It is structured under the hood as plain text using the standard JSON format. These files are primarily created and managed by StarUML, though they are sometimes associated with other UML modeling tools like Modelio or MagicDraw.
The major disadvantage of the .MFJ format is its fragmented nature. Because it only contains a portion of a project (such as a single class diagram, a subsystem, or specific actors), it cannot be opened natively as a standalone visual project. It requires an active host project to be imported into. Furthermore, viewing the raw JSON data is virtually useless for non-developers or business stakeholders who just want to see the visual diagram.
Users typically need to convert the visual representation of the .MFJ data into universal image formats like PNG or JPG, or into document formats like PDF for sharing. Alternatively, merging it back into a standard MDJ (StarUML Document) is required to edit the diagram structurally.
Because .MFJ files store object hierarchies, node positions, and relationships rather than pixel data, standard image or document converters completely fail to process them. Only a dedicated UML modeling tool can parse the JSON tree and render the specific boxes and lines.
