A .MELTEM file is a proprietary document template created by Mellel, a specialized word processor designed for macOS and iPadOS. Scholars, authors, and academic writers use these template files to store complex page layouts, citation styles, auto-titles, and custom typography rules. They are particularly favored for handling multi-lingual documents and right-to-left (RTL) text engines like Arabic and Hebrew.
The major disadvantage of the .MELTEM format is its strict ecosystem lock-in. You cannot open these files natively in Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, or standard web browsers. It requires a paid Mellel license and is entirely restricted to Apple hardware. This makes sharing template guidelines with Windows users or external collaborators extremely frustrating.
