About MDZIP files

A .mdzip file is a MagicDraw Project Archive created by MagicDraw (now known as Cameo Systems Modeler by Dassault Systèmes). It stores complex system architectures, including Unified Modeling Language (UML), SysML, and BPMN models.

This format presents several strict disadvantages. It is a highly proprietary project container. Users need an expensive, specialized enterprise software license just to open and view the visual diagrams. You cannot open a .mdzip file in standard web browsers, basic text editors, or standard image viewers because the file contains complex relational architecture rather than simple graphics.

Users typically need to convert .mdzip files to standard XMI (XML Metadata Interchange) for cross-platform model sharing with tools like Sparx Enterprise Architect. Alternatively, they convert diagrams to PDF, PNG, or SVG formats to share static, readable reports with clients and stakeholders who do not own MagicDraw.

Converting this format is notoriously difficult. Because .mdzip is a closed, proprietary format heavily dependent on the MagicDraw rendering engine, standard online converters fail to process the visual layout of the diagrams. The file itself is actually a standard ZIP container holding a directory of raw XML files. If our analysis detects a supported underlying XML structure or embedded images inside the archive, raw data viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MDZIP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
