Convert MCFP to another file type

To convert MCFP cache files to another format, you need Autodesk Maya or other 3D software.

Convert a file to MCFP

To convert other file formats to the "Fluid Dynamics Cache" file type, you need software like Autodesk Maya or a similar tool.

About MCFP files

The .MCFP file is a proprietary data cache used specifically by Autodesk Maya to store pre-calculated fluid simulation data. When 3D artists simulate complex physics like smoke, fire, or water, the software bakes the voxel calculations into a cache file. This allows users to scrub the animation timeline smoothly without forcing the CPU to recalculate the fluid dynamics for every single frame.

However, .MCFP files present major workflow limitations. The format is entirely proprietary and heavily locked into the Autodesk ecosystem. These files often exceed tens or hundreds of gigabytes, consuming excessive local disk space. Worse, you cannot open them without an expensive Maya subscription, and standard web browsers or generic 3D viewers cannot read or render the internal volumetric data.

To use this fluid data in other software like Blender or Houdini, users generally need to convert the simulation into open standards like VDB (OpenVDB) or ABC (Alembic).

Because .MCFP is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. It lacks a standard mesh structure, meaning only the original Maya fluid engine can interpret the math. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MCFP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

FAQ

If you want to convert MCFP file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use Autodesk Maya or similar software from the "Fluid Simulation Cache Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to MCFP, try Autodesk Maya or another comparable tool in the "Fluid Simulation Cache Storage" category.

The MCFP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MCFP converter.
