Convert MCFI to another file type
To convert MCFI fluid caches to another format, you need Autodesk Maya or other 3D software.
Convert a file to MCFI
To convert other file formats to the "Simulation Cache File" file type, you need software like Autodesk Maya or a similar tool.
About MCFI files
The .MCFI file is a proprietary Maya Initial Fluid Cache File. It is used exclusively by Autodesk Maya to store the initial starting conditions of a volumetric fluid simulation, such as smoke, fire, or clouds. By saving this initial frame state, 3D artists avoid recalculating complex physics from scratch every time they run a simulation.
This format has major disadvantages for collaboration. It is entirely proprietary and closed-source. You cannot open a .MCFI file without a costly Autodesk Maya subscription. Standard web browsers, image viewers, and even most other 3D software cannot read the volumetric grid data contained inside these files. Furthermore, simulation cache files often exceed hundreds of megabytes or even gigabytes, making them difficult to share or store.
If you need to use this fluid data in other programs like Blender or Houdini, the best target format for conversion is VDB (OpenVDB). VDB preserves the volumetric density and temperature grids, whereas standard geometry formats like OBJ or FBX will fail because fluids lack solid polygon meshes.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert externally. Standard online converters fail because the file relies on Autodesk's internal solver architecture to be understood. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, partial viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MCFI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
FAQ
If you want to convert MCFI file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use Autodesk Maya or similar software from the "Fluid Simulation Cache Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to MCFI, try Autodesk Maya or another comparable tool in the "Fluid Simulation Cache Storage" category.
The MCFI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MCFI converter.
