About LWD files
The .LWD file extension is a notorious source of confusion because it serves three distinct, incompatible purposes across different industries. The most common use is as a Navigation Map Data file for Logicom GPS systems, typically stored on SD cards to update road networks. These are proprietary binary blobs, making them nearly impossible to edit or convert without specific manufacturer tools.
A significant portion of users, however, encounter .LWD files as Data Logs generated by Digital Control Inc. (DCI) Falcon and DigiTrak locators. These files contain critical directional drilling data (pitch, roll, depth) recorded during bore operations. The friction here is high: field engineers often need this data in Excel (.XLSX) or CSV formats to generate reports for clients, but the raw .LWD file is locked to the DigiTrak LWD desktop software.
Less frequently, an .LWD file might be a legacy Business Process Model created by Logic Works BPwin (now part of the ERwin suite) or a scene file associated with LightWave 3D. For DCI logs, the best conversion workflow is to export to CSV for analysis. For legacy diagrams or 3D scenes, converting to PDF or modern mesh formats like OBJ ensures the content remains accessible without maintaining decades-old software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LWD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted TDMS, WDH and LVM files.
The LWD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LWD converter.
