About LVLX files

The .LVLX format is an Extendable Level File originally developed by Wohlstand for the open-source Platform Game Engine (PGE), now widely known as part of the Moondust Project. These files store 2D platformer level data, including block placements, non-player characters (NPCs), player spawn points, background IDs, and trigger events. They are most notably used within the custom fan-game community for building episodes.

To properly visualize or edit the map logic, you need the dedicated PGE Editor. The .LVLX format was introduced to solve the rigid, positional limitations of the older LVL format. By utilizing marked parameters, .LVLX allows data to be read regardless of its structural order, ensuring future-proof compatibility when new engine features are added.

However, the format's main disadvantage is limited backward compatibility. Older game engine forks or vanilla legacy builds simply do not understand the modern .LVLX architecture, leading to "unrecognized format" errors or outright crashes when players attempt to load the map. Consequently, level designers frequently need to downgrade and convert .LVLX files back to the legacy LVL format to ensure their custom episodes are broadly playable across all engine versions.

Because this is a highly specialized game configuration format, standard online converters fail completely. An .LVLX file is not a standard document; it is a proprietary mapping of internal object IDs, graphical coordinates, and logic scripts. Only the native game engine's compiler or the PGE Maintainer tool can reliably translate the internal structure without breaking the playable level.

The LVLX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LVLX converter.
