About LUD files

The .LUD file is a proprietary custom dictionary format created by ABBYY Lingvo. It stores custom translations, word lists, and specialized glossaries added by the user to their dictionary database.

Because .LUD is a closed, proprietary format, it presents significant disadvantages for users. It strictly locks your personal language data into the ABBYY ecosystem. You cannot open these files natively in web browsers, standard text editors, or alternative open-source dictionary software like GoldenDict. Relying on this format requires an active installation of ABBYY Lingvo to view or edit your own vocabulary lists.

Users typically need to convert .LUD files to standard formats like CSV, TXT, or XML to migrate their custom glossaries to other platforms, share them with colleagues, or create safe backups. Standard online converters fail to process .LUD files because the data structure is compiled and undocumented by the manufacturer.

This file format is difficult to open or convert externally. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the structured dictionary data. If our analysis detects supported underlying string data, basic text extraction or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LUD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The LUD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LUD converter.
