About LPMD files

The .LPMD file extension is primarily used by Las Palmeras Molecular Dynamics (LPMD), a modular application designed for molecular dynamics simulations and analysis. These files store critical structural data, including atomic coordinates, chemical species, masses, velocities, and simulation bounding box parameters necessary to compute atomic interactions.

While the LPMD software provides a robust framework for physicists and chemists, the .LPMD format itself presents severe interoperability challenges. It is a highly specialized, niche format. Researchers often encounter problems when trying to share .LPMD data with colleagues who use mainstream computational chemistry platforms like VMD (Visual Molecular Dynamics) or LAMMPS. The files are frequently too large for standard text editors and remain entirely unsupported by regular 3D viewing applications.

To overcome these limitations, users must convert .LPMD files into standardized structural formats. The best conversion targets include XYZ (for simple atomic coordinates), PDB (Protein Data Bank format for broader software compatibility), or CSV for raw statistical analysis. Note that converting to simpler formats like XYZ will result in the loss of velocity and unit cell bounding data, retaining only the basic spatial positions of the atoms.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because generic online converters lack the specialized parsers needed to interpret LPMD headers and coordinate blocks. Usually, only the original LPMD command-line utility can properly read or export the full dataset.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LPMD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

FAQ

If you want to convert LPMD file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use LPMD or similar software from the "Molecular Dynamics Simulation Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to LPMD, try LPMD or another comparable tool in the "Molecular Dynamics Simulation Data" category.

The LPMD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LPMD converter.
