Convert LM to another file type
To convert LM Models to another format, you need Fluency Now or other Database software.
Convert a file to LM
To convert other file formats to the "Translation Memory Data" file type, you need software like Fluency Now or a similar tool.
About LM files
The .LM file extension is primarily associated with Fluency Now, a Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tool developed by Western Standard. In this context, the file functions as a Language Model - a statistical database that helps the software predict and suggest translations based on previous work. These files are crucial for translators aiming to speed up workflow but are notoriously difficult to use outside the Fluency ecosystem.
Users frequently face difficulties when trying to migrate these assets to other industry-standard tools like SDL Trados or MemoQ. Because the .LM format is optimized for Fluency's internal logic, it is not natively readable by text editors or web browsers. Simply renaming the extension to TXT will result in garbled data.
A secondary, legacy use of the .LM extension is found in Microsoft speech technologies (SAPI), where it stores language model data for speech recognition engines. These are often compiled binary files used to define grammar and vocabulary probabilities.
Best Conversion Targets:
For Translation Migration: Convert to TMX (Translation Memory eXchange) or XLIFF. This usually requires using the 'Export' function within Fluency Now itself, as third-party converters rarely decode the proprietary logic correctly.
For Editing/Analysis: Export to TXT or CSV to view the raw word lists and probabilities in a spreadsheet.
For Archiving: Save reports as PDF if you strictly need a visual record of the language model's statistics.
Convert.Guru analyzes your LM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert LM file to LF, SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR or PIF, you can use Fluency Now or similar software from the "Translation Language Model" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to LM, try Fluency Now or another comparable tool in the "Translation Language Model" category.
The LM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LM converter.
