A .lightkeyproj file is a lighting project created by Lightkey, a professional macOS application used to configure and control DMX-compatible lighting fixtures. It stores stage layouts, lighting sequences, cues, and fixture patching data for live events, nightclubs, and churches.
This file format is highly proprietary and locked to the Apple ecosystem. Monospace GmbH developed it specifically for their software, meaning you cannot open a .lightkeyproj file on a Windows PC or natively import it into other lighting consoles like grandMA or Onyx. Furthermore, older versions of the software cannot open projects saved in newer versions. This creates a severe vendor lock-in and limits collaboration with stage crews who do not own a Mac.
Because it contains specialized DMX logic rather than standard document text or media, standard online converters fail to process these files. If you need to share your fixture data with a crew, the best workaround is to open the file in the original software and export your patch list as a CSV or PDF.
Opening or converting this file without the original software is notoriously difficult. Often, only the original Lightkey application can properly read or export the data.
