The .KYB file format stores Keyboard Layout mapping data. It defines how physical key presses on a hardware keyboard translate into digital characters, commands, or macros. Emulators like Bochs use these files to ensure correct input translation across different host and guest operating systems. Other specialized software and older games also use .KYB files for custom keybinds. These files present several distinct disadvantages. First, they are often proprietary to the specific software that created them. A .KYB file designed for an emulator will not work in a game or a modern OS environment. Second, they lack a universal standard. Some are plain text, while others are compiled binary files. This makes them highly restrictive if you want to migrate your custom layout to another program or device. Standard online converters completely fail to process binary .KYB files because they lack the specific parsing logic required to extract the key mappings. If your .KYB file is text-based, the best conversion targets are standard TXT or XML files, which allow you to safely read and manually port the mappings.
