About KY8 files
The .KY8 file is a proprietary data component associated with Sage 50 Accounting (formerly known as Peachtree). Technically, this file functions as a database key or index file - often part of the Pervasive PSQL (Btrieve) database architecture that powers the software. In educational contexts, these files are sometimes distributed as part of an "Answer Key" dataset for accounting textbooks, allowing instructors to verify student work against a master company file.
Because .KY8 files are strictly internal binary dependencies, they are not designed to be opened, edited, or viewed by humans. A common problem for users is attempting to double-click a .KY8 file, only to find that Windows cannot associate it with an application. This is because the file is merely a cog in a larger machine; it must exist alongside corresponding DAT and MKG files within a valid Sage company directory to function. It cannot be "converted" in isolation. To access the financial data inside (like ledgers or balance sheets), you must open the full company within Sage 50 and use the internal export tools. For archiving or sharing, the best practice is to export reports to PDF or data tables to CSV or XLSX (Excel) directly from the Sage interface.
Convert.Guru analyzes your KY8 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert KY8 file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Sage 50 or similar software from the "Accounting Database Key" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to KY8, try Sage 50 or another comparable tool in the "Accounting Database Key" category.
The KY8 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KY8 converter.
