About KXX files
The .KXX file is a Keyman Developer Encrypted Keyboard File created by Tavultesoft (now managed by SIL International). It is used to distribute custom keyboard layouts securely, specifically for complex or lesser-known languages. To open or manage this file natively, users rely on Keyman Developer.
The primary disadvantage of the .KXX format is its strict encryption. It is a closed, proprietary format designed specifically to lock the source code and prevent unauthorized users from viewing or modifying the underlying keyboard mapping logic. Because it is encrypted, it is completely unreadable in standard text editors and cannot be natively supported by web browsers. Users often need to convert .KXX files back into standard .KMN (Keyman Source) files to edit the layout rules, or compile them into .KMX files for active deployment on user devices.
However, this file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert outside of its native ecosystem. Reversing the encryption to recover the original mapping data usually requires the developer's original environment or specific decryption keys, causing standard online converters to fail. Even if full decryption is blocked, our tool can still inspect the file, read unencrypted header data, and show internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your KXX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The KXX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KXX converter.
