The .kwb file format is primarily associated with KeyWord Braille, a proprietary document format generated by refreshable braille displays like the BrailleNote. Alternatively, it functions as a Kwalitan Work File used to store qualitative data projects in the Kwalitan research suite. To open these files properly, users must rely on specific hardware from HumanWare or dedicated accessibility software such as the Duxbury Braille Translator.
Users usually need to convert .kwb files because they are incredibly restrictive and entirely useless on a standard Windows or Mac PC. If a visually impaired student or professional emails a KeyWord Braille file to a sighted colleague, standard word processors like Microsoft Word or Google Docs cannot open it.
