About KTZ files

A .KTZ file is a 3D environment and animation project created by Kahootz, a discontinued educational software suite built by the Australian Children's Television Foundation (ACTF). These files encapsulate 3D scenes, character animations, embedded sounds, and interactive elements designed by students for school projects. Because the ACTF officially discontinued the software in 2012, .KTZ files suffer from severe compatibility issues. The format is entirely proprietary, closed-source, and natively tied to an obsolete 32-bit graphics engine. This means you cannot open a .KTZ file on modern Windows or macOS systems without legacy emulation, nor can standard 3D software parse its interactive logic. Users usually want to convert .KTZ files to modern video formats like MP4 or AVI to preserve old school projects. Originally, this required a specific add-on called Kahootz Movie Maker. Because standard conversion of the 3D logic is impossible today, the most realistic target formats involve extracting embedded assets like textures (JPG, PNG) or voice recordings (WAV), though the 3D layout will be lost.
