About KMF files
A .kmf file typically serves one of two distinct technical purposes, both related to customizing user input. The most common variation is a Keyboard Mapping File generated by Everyone Piano, a virtual piano simulator. These files function as configuration maps, assigning specific computer keyboard keys to musical notes to replicate a physical piano layout. They do not contain audio data (like MP3 or MIDI), meaning users cannot "play" a KMF file in a media player - a common source of confusion. The second variation is a Keyboard Macro File used by SAS (Statistical Analysis System). In this enterprise context, the file stores automation shortcuts and code snippets to streamline data analysis workflows.
Because both formats are proprietary configuration files, they are essentially "locked" to their respective software. Users often struggle when trying to transfer these settings between computers or when attempting to view the mappings on a device that doesn't have the software installed.
Practical Conversion Tips:
For Viewing/Archiving: Since these are often structured data files, you can attempt to "convert" them to TXT by opening them in a text editor like Notepad++ to view the raw configuration data.
For Documentation: To share a key map without requiring the recipient to install Everyone Piano, the best workflow is to open the map in the software and "print to" PDF or capture a JPG screenshot of the layout.
For SAS Users: These files are strictly for import/export within the SAS Enhanced Editor and cannot be meaningfully converted to other formats without losing their functional logic.
Convert.Guru analyzes your KMF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert KMF file to SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF, ECW, SID, IMG or DEM, you can use Everyone Piano or similar software from the "Keyboard Configuration Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to KMF, try Everyone Piano or another comparable tool in the "Keyboard Configuration Storage" category.
The KMF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KMF converter.
