Extract text from KID files

To convert other file formats to the "Visual Learning Diagram" file type, you need software like Kidspiration or a similar tool.
The .KID file extension is primarily associated with Kidspiration, a legacy visual learning and mind-mapping tool designed for K-5 students by Inspiration Software. These files function as digital canvases where children create diagrams, concept maps, and visual webs using a library of vector icons and text bubbles. Because .KID files are proprietary binary containers, they are not compatible with modern standard tools like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or standard image viewers.
Users typically encounter .KID files when trying to archive old educational materials or student portfolios from the early 2000s. A common issue is that Kidspiration software is largely discontinued and difficult to run on modern operating systems like Windows 10/11 or macOS, making the files effectively "locked" without the original application. For archiving, the best approach is converting these documents to PDF to preserve the visual layout. For re-use in other documents, converting to PNG or JPG is ideal.
A secondary, less common use (approx. 18%) of the .KID extension is for CAD Pipe Edge Profiles used by Allplan, a BIM/CAD solution by Nemetschek. Unlike the educational files, these are often XML-based text files defining geometry settings for piping. These can be opened with a text editor but require Allplan for their intended engineering context.
