About KDE files

The .KDE file is a proprietary KryptoStorage Container File originally developed by Kaspersky Labs. It functions as a secure virtual drive used to store sensitive files using strong AES encryption. Typically, these files are created and managed by Kaspersky Total Security or the legacy Kaspersky KryptoStorage application. Users often seek to convert or open .KDE files to recover archived personal data. However, the format presents significant challenges. It is a closed, proprietary format heavily locked down by enterprise-grade encryption. The biggest disadvantage is that it requires an active subscription or installation of the exact Kaspersky software version used to create it, alongside the original master password. Without these, the file is a completely unreadable block of data. Furthermore, the containers are pre-allocated, meaning a .KDE file will consume large amounts of disk space even if empty, making it difficult to transfer over standard email or web limits. To migrate data out of a .KDE file, direct conversion is not possible. You must mount the drive in Kaspersky, unlock it, and manually export the contents into standard open formats like ZIP archives or plain PDF documents. Because it is heavily encrypted, standard online converters fail to process this format. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your KDE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The KDE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KDE converter.
