Convert KCL to another file type
To convert KCL calibration files to another format, you need KTuner or other Data software.
Convert a file to KCL
To convert other file formats to the "ECU Calibration & Game Assets" file type, you need software like KTuner or a similar tool.
About KCL files
The .KCL file format serves two completely different purposes. Most commonly, it is an Engine Tuning Calibration file created by KTuner. These files act as the digital brain for modified vehicles, storing complex 3D maps for fuel injection, ignition timing, boost control, and VTEC engagement parameters. Alternatively, a .KCL file is a Nintendo Collision File used in games like Mario Kart 8 and Wii. It contains the invisible 3D geometry and octrees that dictate where karts can drive, collide, or fall.
Both formats are strictly proprietary and locked to specific ecosystems. KTuner .KCL files are binary blobs that require the exact KTuner software version - and often linked ECU hardware - just to open them. This makes it incredibly frustrating to share tuning logic on forums or view maps on a mobile device without an expensive hardware interface. Standard spreadsheet apps like Microsoft Excel cannot read them. Similarly, Nintendo .KCL files are unreadable in standard 3D viewers.
If you need to analyze engine data, the best approach is exporting specific tables from the KTuner interface as CSV or PDF files. For game modders, converting the Nintendo collision file to OBJ is required to visualize and edit the track mesh in Blender.
Because .KCL files are complex, closed-source formats, traditional online converters fail to process them. They rely heavily on the original software to correctly parse the specific data arrays. However, just drag and drop your .KCL file into convert.guru. We will instantly identify whether it is an ECU calibration or a game collision file, inspect the internal hex structure, and extract any readable text strings. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format, partial viewing may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your KCL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert KCL file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use KTuner or similar software from the "Engine Tuning & Collision Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to KCL, try KTuner or another comparable tool in the "Engine Tuning & Collision Data" category.
The KCL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KCL converter.
