About JTEX files

The .jtex file is a proprietary texture format used primarily in Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS video games. It stores raster graphical data that the game engine maps onto 3D models during gameplay.

Because this is an internal game asset, commercial software does not support it. Video game modders and archivists rely on reverse-engineered, community-built applications like Kuriimu, Switch Toolbox, or Wexos's Toolbox to open and extract these textures.

The main disadvantage of a .jtex file is its closed ecosystem. Files cannot be natively viewed in web browsers, operating systems, or standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop. The format is heavily optimized for specific console hardware, often utilizing undocumented compression schemes that lock away the raw image data.

To view or modify the graphics, users must convert the .jtex file to common image formats. The best target formats are PNG for lossless editing or DDS (DirectDraw Surface) if you need to retain specific mipmaps and block compression data.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard online converters lack the specific, reverse-engineered parsers needed to read Nintendo's proprietary headers. Often, only the original hardware or specialized modding software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your JTEX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
