Extract text from JAWS script files (JSS)

The .JSS file extension is most notably associated with JAWS Script Source files, written for the JAWS (Job Access With Speech) screen reader by Freedom Scientific. These plain text files contain the source code used to customize how the screen reader interacts with applications. While powerful for accessibility, sharing raw .JSS files can be problematic; they require the JAWS Script Manager to compile into executable JSB files, and users without the software cannot easily view the logic. For documentation or collaboration, it is often better to convert these scripts to universal formats like TXT or PDF.
However, a significant number of .JSS files found in the wild (approx. 44%) are actually Microsoft Word Open XML documents (ZIP-compressed DOCX) or secured PDF files that have been renamed or misidentified, often by proprietary document management systems like Strata J-ICE. This creates a major issue: users try to open them as text scripts, only to see garbled binary data. Whether you have a script that needs archiving or a "mystery" document that won't open, the best approach is to identify the true underlying format and convert it to a standard PDF or DOCX for immediate accessibility.
