About JSO files
A .jso file is most often a JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) data file that has been saved with a shortened 3-letter extension, typically to comply with legacy operating system constraints (like MS-DOS 8.3 naming) or specific proprietary software conventions. While the standard extension is JSON, developers or specific applications - such as certain tax software or older web frameworks - may output .jso files.
The frustrating part for users is that modern operating systems (Windows, macOS) do not automatically associate .jso with a text editor or web browser. This results in the frustrating "Windows cannot open this file" error. Furthermore, because the extension is non-standard, data import tools often fail to recognize it even if the internal structure is valid JSON.
For most users, the goal is to view or edit the data. Converting or renaming the file to JSON restores compatibility with code editors like Visual Studio Code and Sublime Text. For non-developers, converting to CSV (for Excel) or XML is often more practical for data analysis. Note: A smaller subset of .jso files may be compressed disk images for PSP (PlayStation Portable) games, which are binary files and completely different from the text-based JSON format.
Convert.Guru analyzes your JSO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert JSO file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE, ARJ or LHA, you can use Visual Studio Code or similar software from the "Structured Data Interchange" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to JSO, try Visual Studio Code or another comparable tool in the "Structured Data Interchange" category.
The JSO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JSO converter.
