A .jpg_last file is a proprietary indexing and versioning pointer created by Western Digital (WD) backup utilities, primarily WD Backup and WD SmartWare. The backup software uses this file to track the most recently saved version of a corresponding image.

They discover folders filled with .jpg_last files instead of their actual photos and panic, assuming their image collection is corrupted or locked behind a proprietary wall.
