About JMOT files

A .JMOT file is a proprietary 3D animation file used by Nintendo for games on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U consoles. It stores skeletal animation data, tracking how bones rotate, scale, and translate over time during a specific movement sequence. Because it does not contain the 3D mesh itself, it is usually paired with model files like BCH or BFRES.

These files are typically extracted and opened using specialized ROM hacking and game modding tools, such as Switch Toolbox or Ohana3DS.

Users usually need to convert .JMOT files because they are proprietary and cannot be read by standard 3D animation software. The format is locked to Nintendo's internal development ecosystem. Game modders must extract the file to analyze how an in-game character moves or to replace the animation with a custom one.

The best target formats for conversion are DAE (Collada), FBX, or SMD. These standard formats allow you to import the skeletal animations into mainstream software like Blender or Autodesk Maya. Be aware that complex bone weight interpolations or console-specific physics flags may be lost during conversion.

Because .JMOT is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. They simply do not have the specific reverse-engineered code required to read Nintendo's binary structures. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your JMOT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
