About JMDL files

A .JMDL file is a proprietary 3D model format used internally by Nintendo for Wii U and 3DS video games. It stores raw 3D mesh data, including character models, items, or environment geometry. It is heavily optimized for console hardware. The major disadvantage of this format is its closed ecosystem. Because it is a compiled asset meant only for Nintendo's internal engine, it cannot be natively imported into standard 3D modeling software like Blender or Maya. Furthermore, a .JMDL file is incomplete on its own: it strictly contains geometry and armature data, while textures and animations are split into separate JTEX and JMOT files. Modders and dataminers often encounter .JMDL files when unpacking JARC game archives. To make these files usable, they must be converted into standard, widely supported 3D formats such as OBJ, FBX, or DAE. Converting to .OBJ will recover the base mesh, while .FBX or .DAE can preserve the rigging and bone structures. Since Nintendo does not provide public tools for these files, working with them relies on community-developed scripts.

Convert.Guru analyzes your JMDL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The JMDL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JMDL converter.
