About JCRYPT files

A .jcrypt file is an encrypted data container. Originally developed for the JMasters JCRYPT encryption service, it relies on a Java-based web client to apply random data manipulation algorithms to plain text or binary files. Today, the .jcrypt extension is more commonly co-opted by malicious ransomware strains, including JCrypt, Udaigen, and MafiaWare666. These malware variants append the extension to victims' files (e.g., document.docx.jcrypt) after locking them with AES algorithms.

These files are fundamentally scrambled ciphertext. They lack standard structural metadata and cannot be read by web browsers, text editors, or operating systems. Opening them requires the legacy JMasters Java Client for legitimate archives, or specialized security software like the Avast Decryption Tool for ransomware payloads. Because the contents are cryptographically locked, standard online converters will always fail to process them. You cannot convert a .jcrypt file directly into readable target formats like PDF or DOCX; decryption is a mandatory prerequisite. Our inspection tools can analyze the underlying binary headers to determine if the file is a legacy JMasters archive or a known ransomware signature. If our analysis detects the specific AES structure used by certain vulnerabilities, we can point you toward the correct recovery method.

Convert.Guru analyzes your JCRYPT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The JCRYPT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JCRYPT converter.
