About J2L files

The .J2L file extension is a proprietary level data format used exclusively by the 1998 2D platformer Jazz Jackrabbit 2. Created by Epic Games (formerly Epic MegaGames), these files store level map layouts, tile coordinates, enemy spawn points, event triggers, and references to external assets like music and graphics. They are authored and modified using the game's official level editor, the Jazz Creation Station (JCS).

A major disadvantage of the .J2L format is its extreme obsolescence and rigid dependency on the original 1998 game engine. The file does not contain actual image or audio data; instead, it is essentially a structural map pointing to external .J2T (tileset) and music files. If you share a .J2L file without its accompanying assets, it becomes entirely useless to the recipient. Furthermore, these files cannot be opened in modern general-purpose game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine.

Users often attempt to convert .J2L files to extract full map layouts as PNG image files, or to migrate the level data into modern, open-source engine recreations. However, standard online document converters will fail entirely because this is a closed, proprietary data array, not a standard raster image or vector file. Direct conversion to video or images requires rendering the map through the specific Jazz Jackrabbit 2 engine logic.

Because this is a closed, proprietary format, traditional conversion is practically impossible without specialized retro-gaming tools. Standard online converters fail to process it. However, you can drag and drop your .J2L file onto convert.guru to safely analyze it. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view its hexadecimal headers, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects an embedded archive or supported underlying metadata, viewing or extracting specific text components may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your J2L file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted J2I, J2B and J2V files.

The J2L Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our J2L converter.
