J2L files are proprietary level modules created for the 1998 side-scrolling platformer Jazz Jackrabbit 2. Developed by Epic Games (formerly Epic MegaGames), these binary files store the spatial architecture of a stage, including layer configurations, tile placement, enemy spawn points, and event triggers. A significant constraint for users is the file's dependency on external assets; a .J2L file typically requires a corresponding .J2T (Tileset) file to render graphics correctly. Without the specific tileset referenced in the file header, the level appears as a jumbled mess or fails to load entirely.
