About IVE files

The .IVE extension primarily identifies the native binary format used by OpenSceneGraph, an open-source high-performance 3D graphics toolkit. These files contain a complete 3D scene graph, including geometry, lighting data, textures, and hierarchical relationships, all compiled into a compact binary stream for fast loading. Unlike the text-based OSG format, .IVE files are not human-readable and are notoriously difficult to edit without the original source environment.

Users frequently encounter compatibility friction because .IVE files are version-dependent on the OpenSceneGraph library and lack native support in mainstream 3D modeling software like Blender or Autodesk Maya. This proprietary lock-in makes it hard to extract assets for use in modern engines like Unity or Unreal Engine.

The IVE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IVE converter.
