About IPALIAS files
The .ipalias file is an iPhoto Alias File historically used by the Apple iPhoto application on macOS. It functions purely as a system shortcut or pointer, directing the software to an original image file located elsewhere on the local hard drive. Rather than duplicating massive image files, the application uses these lightweight aliases to organize albums and galleries.
Historically, these files were exclusively created and managed by Apple iPhoto, which Apple officially discontinued and replaced with Apple Photos in 2015. The primary disadvantage of a .ipalias file is that it contains absolutely zero raster image data. Users frequently back up or email these files, mistakenly believing they are saving their actual photographs. Because it is a proprietary, OS-specific shortcut, it is entirely unreadable on Windows or Linux systems. Additionally, if the source image is moved, renamed, or deleted, the alias becomes a broken link, rendering the .ipalias file useless.
Users typically attempt to convert these files to standard JPG, PNG, or HEIC formats to recover their photos. Standard online converters will always fail because there are no image pixels to process. The best outcome is converting the file to TXT to read the internal file path, though the actual image must still be located manually.
This file format is difficult to open or convert. Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible, allowing you to extract the original directory path to track down your missing photo.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IPALIAS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The IPALIAS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IPALIAS converter.
