About IOPLIST files

An .ioplist file is a specialized system cache and property list used internally by Apple's macOS (formerly Mac OS X). It specifically stores I/O Kit hardware and driver configurations, mapping hardware personalities for kernel extensions (KEXT).

Typically managed automatically by the macOS kernel during system boot, these files can be opened and manually analyzed by developers using Apple Xcode or specialized property list editors.

Users rarely need to interact with these files directly unless they are troubleshooting a kernel panic, fixing a boot cache issue, or debugging external hardware configurations. The primary disadvantage of the .ioplist format is that it is a highly restricted, system-specific file. It is almost always compressed via GZIP (appearing as .ioplist.gz) and usually relies on Apple's proprietary binary structure. Attempting to open one on a Windows PC or with a basic text editor typically results in a screen full of unreadable gibberish, and altering the file manually can cause a system crash.

If you are a developer or IT administrator trying to extract readable configurations, converting the .ioplist to XML, TXT, or a standard PLIST is the most practical solution. This allows you to read the hardware registry mapping without risking corruption, though you should not attempt to convert it back and inject it into the operating system.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because it relies on a proprietary Apple binary structure and is frequently buried inside compressed system archives. Often only the original system utilities can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IOPLIST file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The IOPLIST Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IOPLIST converter.
