About IMV files
The .IMV file primarily functions as an ImageMixer Video Project file. It is created by software bundled with legacy Sony camcorders, originally developed by Pixela. Alternatively, it serves as an InterVideo Multimedia format used by earlier versions of Corel WinDVD. ImageMixer project files contain timeline instructions, text, and local file paths to external media. They do not hold actual video frames. This creates a severe disadvantage: you cannot play the file as a standard video, and it relies entirely on obsolete, proprietary software to render the output. To make the video usable, you need to export the project to a universal target format like MP4 or AVI. The InterVideo variant is a closed, proprietary video format that modern media players lack the codecs to decode. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because standard online converters fail when they expect a raw video stream but receive raw project data instead. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Even if it is a project file, we can inspect the internal content and show text data to help you locate your missing source media.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IMV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IMV file to MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M4V, 3GP, OGV, ASF or RM, you can use Sony ImageMixer or similar software from the "Video Project Tracking" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to IMV, try Sony ImageMixer or another comparable tool in the "Video Project Tracking" category.
The IMV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IMV converter.
