About IMV files
IMV files are primarily known as video project files created by Sony ImageMixer, a legacy editing suite bundled with older Sony Handycam camcorders. These files function similarly to an Edit Decision List (EDL); they contain metadata, transitions, and pointers to the actual video and audio clips - usually stored as MPG, MOD, or JPG files - rather than containing the media itself.
A significant source of user frustration is that an .IMV file is often small (a few kilobytes), meaning it cannot be converted or played if the original source footage has been deleted or moved. Because Sony ImageMixer is largely discontinued and incompatible with modern operating systems like Windows 11, users are frequently locked out of their old editing projects.
A secondary, less common use for this extension is associated with InterVideo WinDVD (now owned by Corel), where it acts as a temporary or proprietary multimedia container.
Best Conversion Targets:
For Viewing: If the file is a project, you must locate the original source clips (often MPG) and convert those directly to H.264 MP4 for broad compatibility.
For Recovery: If the file actually contains video data (typical of the InterVideo variant), renaming the extension to MPG or converting to MKV can sometimes salvage the footage.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IMV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IMV file to MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M4V, 3GP, OGV, ASF or RM, you can use Sony ImageMixer or similar software from the "Video Project Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to IMV, try Sony ImageMixer or another comparable tool in the "Video Project Storage" category.
The IMV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IMV converter.
