About IFX files

The .IFX file extension is highly fragmented and associated with multiple, entirely different software ecosystems. Primarily, it functions as a TIFF Fax Image File created by older tools like Microsoft Fax. However, it is also heavily used as a Spectroscopy Experiment Data File by ISS Vinci software, a Video Effect File in MAGIX Video Deluxe, and an XML-based electronic form for IBM FileNet eForms. This fragmentation is a massive disadvantage. A user receiving an .IFX file rarely knows which application generated it, and standard operating systems fail to assign a default program. ISS Vinci files require expensive, proprietary scientific software to open. Microsoft Fax files use an outdated TIFF wrapper that many modern image viewers fail to parse correctly. MAGIX video effect files rely on a RIFF container holding proprietary instructions, useless outside their specific video editor. Because of these strict limits, users often need to convert fax-based .IFX files to standard formats like PDF or JPG for universal sharing. Scientific data files from Vinci should ideally be exported to CSV directly within the original software to prevent data loss. This file format is notoriously difficult to open because it relies on original software environments to properly read or export the data. Standard online converters usually fail because they cannot guess the correct internal structure. Just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to identify the actual format, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format like TIFF or XML, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The IFX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IFX converter.
