About IFX files

The .IFX file extension is highly fragmented and associated with multiple, entirely different software ecosystems. Primarily, it functions as a TIFF Fax Image File created by older tools like Microsoft Fax. However, it is also heavily used as a Spectroscopy Experiment Data File by ISS Vinci software, a Video Effect File in MAGIX Video Deluxe, and an XML-based electronic form for IBM FileNet eForms. This fragmentation is a massive disadvantage. A user receiving an .IFX file rarely knows which application generated it, and standard operating systems fail to assign a default program. ISS Vinci files require expensive, proprietary scientific software to open. Microsoft Fax files use an outdated TIFF wrapper that many modern image viewers fail to parse correctly. MAGIX video effect files rely on a RIFF container holding proprietary instructions, useless outside their specific video editor.
