About IDCL files

The .IDCL file is an Autodesk Inventor Desktop Content Library file. It operates as a local database containing standard CAD components like bolts, nuts, structural profiles, and bearings used in 3D mechanical design. The primary application to open and manage these files is Autodesk Inventor. The .IDCL format is highly proprietary and closed. It locks your engineering data into the Autodesk ecosystem. Users face significant challenges when they need to share these libraries with suppliers or clients who do not have an active, expensive CAD subscription. It is a database of parameterized models, not a single 3D file, making it completely useless in standard web browsers or generic CAD viewers. Standard online converters fail to process .IDCL files because they look for raw 3D geometry (like STEP or IGES) instead of proprietary database tables. Extracting the individual parts requires the original Autodesk software to compile the 3D meshes from the internal parameters. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert without the native application. If our analysis detects a supported underlying database format, viewing or extracting raw metadata and text may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IDCL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The IDCL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IDCL converter.
