About ICR files

The .ICR extension is an ambiguous format primarily associated with proprietary medical imaging and industrial radiography workflows. Most commonly, it represents a Medical Study Record generated by ICRco digital radiography systems (such as their Clarity PACS solutions). These files encapsulate raw image data from Computed Radiography (CR) or Digital Radiography (DR) scanners alongside patient metadata. Because these files are designed for clinical diagnosis within a closed FDA-regulated environment, they are strictly proprietary. You cannot open them with standard image viewers like Windows Photos or Adobe Photoshop. The main frustration for users is the inability to share these X-rays or scans with patients or non-specialists without conversion. To make these files accessible, the best approach is converting them to the industry-standard DICOM format for medical interchange, or to JPG/PNG for casual viewing on web and mobile devices.

Secondary uses of the extension include 3D Medical Image Data from 3D Systems and legacy Catalog Content Reports from Cognos Impromptu (now part of IBM Cognos Analytics). In the case of Cognos reports, the file contains structured business intelligence data rather than images. These are often obsolete and difficult to parse without the original enterprise environment. For archiving these reports, converting to PDF or CSV is recommended to preserve the data in a human-readable format. Occasionally, .icr files may be Linux ELF executables (likely firmware for embedded devices), which should not be converted but rather executed in the appropriate environment.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ICR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The ICR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ICR converter.
