Extract text from Fax image documents (I3F)

An .i3f file is a proprietary fax image document used to store received or transmitted fax communications. Originally developed by Data Imaging Solutions, these files are most commonly generated and managed by legacy Interactive Intelligence server software.
Users typically need to convert these files because the .i3f format is highly restrictive. It is an obsolete, closed format that requires a specific proprietary viewer, such as Interaction Fax, to open. Modern operating systems, default image viewers, and web browsers cannot natively read these files. Sending an .i3f file to a client or colleague usually results in confusion, as they will be unable to view the document without installing outdated software.
We strongly recommend converting .i3f files to PDF for standard document sharing and easy printing. For long-term archival without losing raster data quality, converting to TIFF is the best choice. While converting will preserve the visual fax document, you may lose proprietary server routing metadata attached to the original file.
This file format is notably difficult to open or convert because it utilizes a Microsoft Compound file structure (an OLE2 container). The actual multi-page image is buried inside a complex binary shell, causing standard online converters to fail. Often, only the original legacy software can properly read or export the data. We can inspect the file's internal structure and show extracted text or content. If our analysis detects a supported embedded image format, viewing or conversion may still be successful.
