About HXL files
A .HXL file is the native project format for Marmoset Hexels, a specialized grid-based painting tool used to create isometric art, pixel art, and complex animations. Unlike a standard PNG or JPG, this file does not store a simple grid of colored pixels; instead, it contains vector-like data defining the grid geometry (hexels, trixels), layer hierarchy, and animation frames.
Because .HXL is a proprietary format, it suffers from significant compatibility constraints. You cannot view these files in a web browser, standard image viewer, or third-party editors like Adobe Photoshop. To share or publish your work, you generally must export the file from the source software. For static images, converting to PNG is ideal to preserve transparency and sharpness. For animations, GIF or MP4 are the standard targets. If you need to continue editing in other creative suites, converting to PSD (for layers) or SVG (for vector scalability) provides the best flexibility.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HXL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The HXL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HXL converter.
